croatia is and remains a place of longing, even if the journey there can be arduous thanks to a certain airline and nobody could have expected that croatia was already affected by the heat wave. nevertheless, i had a lot of fun driving through istria and to the island of krk for a weekend and enjoying croatian life.
day 1: hotel haludovo
the first stop was the former resort hotel haludovo in malinska on the island of krk. i had seen a report about it on tv and, as i had done in other places before, i really wanted to photograph this lost place. the hotel hosted its last guests in 2001 and since than and since then it has been deteriorating more and more. thankfully, i was almost completely alone on this early morning and was able to take a few shots undisturbed and integrate the few other visitors into the pictures.
day 1: on the road and baška
on the way to the hotel haludovo in krk, which took me along the very pituresque road 66, i stopped briefly at another hotel that was apparently also closed - the hotel flanona near plomin. i also had to make a short stopover in ičići near opatija to go to the beach and enjoy the sea water. finally, after the photo shoot at hotel haludovo, i drove on across the island of krk and ended up in the very tranquil town of baška, where i spent the noon.
day 1: rijeka and labin
it was time to head back to istria and take road 66 again. but first i drove to dvorana mladosti, a sports hall built in 1973 in brutalist style, and took a few photos there.
in the end i ended up in the harbor area of rijeka - actually to look for another photo spot, but unfortunately i didn't reach the turbine launching ramp, or else i was too stupid to find the way there.
so i drove back to the hotel in labin, enjoyed an excellent meal and then walked around the town for a while to enjoy the sunset.
day 2: umag, mirna dam and rovinj
the second day took me across istria. it was a fantastic drive. i made my first stop in umag and walked around the town center for a while. it was incredibly hot, so i was grateful that the car had air conditioning.
east of novigrad, mirna dam leads almost directly over the sea - i always enjoy driving over it.
along the west coast of istria, i finally reached rovinj, where i wanted to get out at least briefly for an ice cream and pay a short visit to the town i love so much.
